The Total Cost of Ownership Case for PP Corrugated

The unit price of a corrugated plastic box is higher than a cardboard equivalent — typically 5 to 8 times higher. But unit cost is the wrong metric when the reuse count is 50×. Here's the comparison that matters:

Why PP Corrugated Wins on Total Cost

A corrugated plastic box rated for 50 uses costs the equivalent of the cardboard it replaces in the first year alone. Every subsequent year is pure cost saving. The calculation shifts further in PP's favor when you include the indirect costs of cardboard: disposal fees, supplier resourcing time, storage space for flat-pack cardboard stock, and the labor cost of building cardboard boxes on the line.

For agricultural and produce operations, the waterproof benefit of PP corrugated is worth quantifying separately. Wax-coated cardboard degrades in wet market conditions — a corrugated plastic produce box handles ice melt, rain, and repeated high-pressure wash without losing a gram of structural integrity. Rejection rates from damaged packaging in transit drop to near zero.

Material Science: What Makes PP Twin-Wall Strong

The twin-wall (or fluted PP) structure distributes load vertically through the flute webs. A 6 mm twin-wall PP sheet has a compressive strength comparable to 5-ply corrugated cardboard at roughly one-third of the weight. The flutes also provide insulation — a corrugated plastic box maintains internal temperature significantly better than a single-wall container. For chilled produce, this matters at every stage from packing shed to retail.

Corrugated Plastic Box FAQs

What thickness (gauge) do I need for my box?
4 mm twin-wall is suitable for light duty (under 15 kg product), packaging inserts, and display. 6 mm is the standard for produce and retail packaging requiring 20–30 kg capacity. 8–10 mm is for heavy industrial applications, large Gaylord-style containers, or multi-trip export boxes rated above 40 kg. Elipacko can advize on the correct gauge for your load and use case.
Can corrugated plastic boxes be printed with custom branding?
Yes. Elipacko prints directly onto the PP surface using flexographic print — up to 4 colors, any design. The print is applied before the box is formed, so it covers the full flat surface with no distortion at fold lines. The print survives pressure-washing and will not fade under normal UV exposure for the life of the box.
Are corrugated plastic boxes food safe?
Elipacko's food-grade corrugated plastic boxes use PP resin compliant with FDA 21 CFR 177.1520. The boxes are suitable for indirect and direct food contact. Specify food-grade compliance when ordering and request the material documentation for your food safety files.
What is the minimum order quantity?
Standard sizes from existing tooling typically have lower minimum order quantities. Custom sizes and custom print require new tooling — minimums are higher and a one-time tooling charge applies. Contact Elipacko directly for current MOQs for your specific box dimensions.
How are corrugated plastic boxes recycled at end of life?
PP is one of the most recyclable plastics. At end of life, corrugated plastic boxes are granulated and the PP flake is re-pelletized into secondary PP resin. The recycling value of the PP at end of life partially offsets the original purchase cost — a factor that rarely appears in cardboard TCO comparisons but is real and quantifiable.
